In 1974, Dr. G.M. Idorn organized the first conference in Koge, Denmark. Since then, 11 conferences have been held in succession as shown in the following table.

    These conferences have promoted the information exchanges among countries in the world and have played an important role in drawing up standards and specifications, and mitigating the damages caused by AAR. However, although more than sixty years have passed and thousands research papers have been published since the first discovery of AAR by Dr. T.E. Stanton, many problems still need to be further investigated. For example, the test methods for identifying the reactivity of aggregates should be improved, long-term effectiveness of admixtures on inhibiting of AAR need to be evaluated, reliable evaluation and repair techniques for damaged structures need to be developed. The 12th ICAAR will provide an international forum for researchers and engineers from academia, industry and government to share experience and knowledge related to AAR and discuss potential solutions to these existing problems.
